Project: Northern Suburbs Transit Systems – Roe
Street
Tunnel
Client: Main Roads WA / Westrail
The WA Government decided to build a rail link from Perth using the reserve land
in the median of the Mitchell Freeway and simultaneously construct the second carriageway
of the freeway. BG&E were invited to study the bridgeworks and subsequently
to design a road tunnel, three road and four rail bridges.
Features:
- The tunnel is 450m long including approaches, with 130m of roof.
- Excavation between the wall was carried out using temporary ground anchors.
- Secant pile walls ensured minimal disturbance of the adjacent bridge footings and
extensive use of precast segments was made for the central wall and roof.
- The main challenges were the required rapid construction, with minimal disruption
to heavy traffic flows in the urban environment.
- The tunnel passes under Roe Street and is close to the foundations of an existing
bridge.
